The Badlands look good on us:
We left Chicago early Sunday morning and clocked four big states and one mighty river before finally pitching tents in the national park.

A series of thunderstorms had rolled through slowing us down and making us a little worried that we would be hit by a direct lightning strike or sucked up by a tornado on the high plains. Why is it thunderstorms look so much worse on the plains than anywhere else? There is a moment or two when you slip under an angry purple blanket of cloud and wonder if you will wake up in Oz.

Even though it rained buckets an hour previous, the ground we slept on was almost completely dry. More rain and lightning through the night made the fact that we forgot all the tent stakes at home a little interesting. We woke to discover the tent was ready bone dry and ready to be put away...no baking in the sun needed.
